Neighbourhood: Wan Chai
Project Date: 2019
Partnered with: Creative Mornings
Key Topics Explored: New & Old Integration, Space Activation, Walkability

Creative Mornings

Wanchai is one of the most interesting neighbourhoods in Hong Kong with influences from old colonial Hong Kong and lots of up-and-coming new entrepreneurial energy with rapid new developments often intersecting both worlds. The influx of new businesses, cafes, restaurants, private developments clashes with a lot of the old culture that has been the core of community cohesion for the neighbourhood.

The issues that we observed in Wan Chai are also apparent in other neighbourhoods: Central & Western, Yau Tsim Mong, and many other gentrifying neighbourhoods around the world. We want to create the tools and define metrics to cultivate an inclusive neighbourhood identity that can be applicable to neighbourhoods facing similar issues to Wanchai.

Neighbourhood Fieldtrips

The neighbourhood walk aims to familiarise public about gentrification and the old and new businesses in Wan Chai. Partnering with Creative Mornings, we explored two very different Wan Chai neighbourhoods in early November.
