This project is the first Hong Kong project to integrate caregivers’ needs into public playspace designs.
In the 2019 Policy Address, it announced the revitalisation of 170+ public playspaces under LCSD. We therefore hope to redesign Shek Yam Lei Muk Road Park, creating a caregiver-friendly playspace from the bottom-up, and eventually submit our opinions to the relevant authorities. From October 2021 to February 2022, we and 9 Civic Design Fellows conducted a 5-month community survey and engaged a total of 378 participants.
This project serves to supplement the scarce research on local caregivers. It explores in-depth about the pains and gains of caregivers, and proposes 9 design principles and 3 park services, offering validatable hypotheses that are applicable to other caregiver-friendly designs.
本計劃是香港第一個將照顧者需要融入公共遊樂空間的設計項目。
於2019年《施政報告》中，政府宣佈將改造康文署轄下超過170個的公共遊樂空間。我們希望藉此機會重新設計石蔭梨木道公園，以由下而上的設計模式，創造一個真正切合照顧者需要的公共遊樂空間，並將意見呈予有關局方。於2021年10月到2022年2月期間，我們與9位街坊研究員開展了為期五個月的社區研究，一共接觸到378名參加者。
目前有關照顧者的研究極少，這個研究則補充了文獻的不足，刨析了照顧者的所需所想，並提出了九個設計原則和三種公園服務，為其他社區的照顧者友善設計提供一個可驗證的基礎。
實地觀察及簡短訪談
我們在石蔭梨木道公園進行了兩次實地觀察，藉此從設施（硬件）、公園的使用者（軟件）和使用者的行為與習慣（行為痕跡）三方面瞭解公園的優缺點。我們一共獲得16份觀察數據。我們亦邀請了71位公園的用家與我們進行簡短訪談，以瞭解他們使用公園的習慣，及對其的評價。
On-site observation and short user interview
We have conducted 2 on-site observations in Shek Yum Lei Muk Road Park. We analysed the pains and gains of the park through collecting quantitative data on facilities (hardware), user (software), and users’ behaviours (behavioural traces). We have collected 16 data. We also interviewed 71 park users on their habits of using the park and their comments about it.

互動研討會
我們在2021年11月12日和19日，分別舉行了兩場互動研討會，深入探討照顧者在日常生活和公園裏所遭遇的痛點和渴望，一共有19名持份者參與，其中包括：居民代表、照顧者代表、專業人士及地區社福機構代表。我們發現兩個關鍵：一、公園對照顧者十分重要，；二、照顧者與被照顧人士是密不可分的。
Focus Group Discussion
On Nov 12 and 19, 2021, we held 2 focus group discussions, exploring in-depth about caregivers’ pains and gains in their daily lives and in parks. There were 19 attendees, including professionals, and representatives of Shek Yum residents, of caregivers, and of regional NGOs. We have 2 key insights: one, a park space is essential to caregivers; two, there exists a tight nexus between caregivers and those who received care.

Workshop: Problem Definition
We and Civic Design Fellows consolidated the data obtained from the three aforementioned events, and generated 3 main themes and 3 ‘How Might We’ questions. They include: Better Environment, Physical Enablement, and Inclusive Engagement.

驗證我們所得的問題：一對一訪問和街頭意見調查
爲了驗證我們就梨木道公園所定義出的三個問題，我們於2021年12月中在梨木道公園向30名街坊進行了一對一訪問，並於2021年12月16及17日在梨木道公園進行了3次街頭意見調查，一共接觸到118位街坊。綜合兩個研究的結果，街坊均十分認同我們發現的問題和我們的三個問題陳述。
Validating the defined problems: 1-1 interviews and Street Polling
To validate the problems we defined regarding Lei Muk Road Park, We interviewed 30 kaifongs at length in 2021 December. On Dec 16 and 17, 2021, we further conducted 3 street pollings and engaged 118 kaifongs. The combined results showed that the community highly agreed with our findings and the 3 ‘How Might We’ questions.

我們在2021年12月10日和23日組織了兩次公衆工作坊，並廣邀了16名來自不同群體的葵青區持份者，來就梨木道公園的實體設計和服務提出新想法。
Public Ideation Workshop
On Dec 10 and 23, 2021, we organised 2 public workshops and invited 16 different stakeholders from Kwai Tsing District to ideate on the physical and service designs in Lei Muk Road Park.

創作原型
綜合之前所有階段所得的洞見，我們歸納出9個設計元素和它們所屬的設計策略，並轉化成九個實體的1:200公園模型。另外，我們亦設計出3套公園服務。
Prototyping
Based on all the insights collected from previous stages, we distilled 9 design elements and their respective design strategies, which were then visualised into 9 1:200 physical models. Besides, we also designed 3 sets of park services for subsequent validation.

驗證
我們有三個驗證目標：一、九個設計主題的滿意度和它們之間的空間關係；二、 每個設計主題下,其相關設施的滿意度；三、公園服務設計的接受程度。我們在2022年1月下旬透過香港聖公會麥理浩夫人中心派發了75份網上問卷，並在2022年1月21日舉辦了綫上實測公園模型工作坊，以收集照顧者與被照顧對象對於目標一和二的意見。我們亦在2022年1月28日舉辦了綫上實測公園服務工作坊，以收集照顧者與被照顧對象對於目標三的意見。
Validation
We validated the level of satisfaction towards: 1) the 9 design elements and their relative spatial relationships; 2) each proposed facility under each design element; and, 3) the 3 park services. Items 1 and 2 were validated by way of an online questionnaire, issued in mid-December 2022 via HKSKH Lady McLehose Centre to 75 participants, and an online Park Model Validation Workshop, held on 21 Jan 2022. Item 3 was validated by way of an online Park Services Validation Workshop, held on 28 Jan 2022.

Report and Design Layout
The public engagement events above have generated fruitful insights. We have processed, analysed and documented them in the final report, together with a design layout for the new caregiver-friendly Lei Muk Road Park.
